The European Commission has proposed a ban on three neonicotinoid insecticides dangerous to bees and other species. If the submitted proposals become law, the use of Bayer's imidacloprid and clothianidin, as well as Syngenta's thiamethoxam will only be allowed in permanent greenhouses "where the crop remains its entire life cycle inside the greenhouse and is not replanted outside" .
The proposal originates from the opinions of the European Food Safety Authority published in 2016 for imidacloprid and laclothianidin. These opinions are consistent with independent scientific assessments of the hazards associated with neonicotinoid insecticides, such as the global assessment published in 2014 and an assessment for Europe published in 2015, as well as a review of the most recent scientific evidence, commissioned by Greenpeace and published in 2017. .
