Albania banned logging for 10 years

A law imposing a 10-year moratorium on permits to clear brush for industrial purposes was adopted Thursday night by 101 of the 140 deputies in the National Assembly.

Albanian Environment Minister Lefter Koka said the country is currently facing an ecological catastrophe, and is forced to clamp down on commercial logging.

Forests covered 51% of Albanian territory before 1990, up from 25% today, according to the Environment Ministry.
