Under the title "Five countries prove that the world does not need fossil fuels," the Colombian publication congratulated Denmark, Scotland, Sweden, Finland and Costa Rica for the feat. According to the publication, Costa Rica is a world model for its protection of the environment, by using renewable sources in the energy matrix.
Hydroelectric power is the main source of electricity for the Ticos, followed by geothermal, wind, biomass and solar.
During the first half of 2015, Costa Rica generated 98.55% of its electricity from renewable sources. In addition, in this same year, it has had two long uninterrupted production periods without fossil fuels: 75 days, from January 1 to March 16, and 94 days, from May 8 to August 9.
